Sextus lll *TM - The Third Vintage
Karlo Estates’ SEXTUS *TMhas been described as a Unicorn by wine critics. To understand why, please watch the 3 minute video on our landing page to learn what four of Canada’s wine journalists had to say about Karlo’s SEXTUS *TM .
Thanks to the vision of co-founder, The Late Richard Karlo (d: 2014), who planted the only Malbec in Prince Edward County and the only Carménère in Eastern Canada, Karlo Estates was the first winery in approximately 150 years to produce a wine blended from all six of the benchmark red varieties specified in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux since the rediscovery of a grape variety thought to be extinct; Carménère. The 2018 Karlo Estates SEXTUS (*TM) was the first blend of all these six grape varieties since a root louse called “phyloxera” ravaged the vineyards of Europe between 1858 and 1870. Celebrated Executive Winemaker, Derek Barnett and Winemaker, Spencer Mayer fulfilled Richard Karlo’s dream posthumously with the production of the coveted 2018 vintage SEXTUS *TM.
However, Karlo was not able to produce SEXTUS *TMin the 2019 vintage because of the challenges in producing great vintages of all six varieties, but thankfully, in 2020, Karlo produced the delicious Second Vintage. Both these SEXTUS *TM vintages sold out.
Many purchasers of Karlo’s 2018 and 2020 SEXTUS *TM vintages expressed interest in buying futures of SEXTUS lll *TM . To that end, Karlo has announced the availability of a limited quantity of 600 bottles of SEXTUS lll *TM to be released as futures. These may be purchased ahead of the general release offering of SEXTUS lll *TM.
The pricing of these futures is set preferentially at the 2020 vintage price of $135 per bottle (minus the HST between December 14th and February 15th, 2025 = $119). SEXTUS lll *TM will be available to these futures purchasers prior to the general release, which will be at/or above $165 per bottle. - Still great value when you consider a 2020 Chateau Haut-Brion first growth 3 Bordeaux blend sells on the LCBO website for $4,949.85 per bottle.
As a complex work of art, until all six of these varieties are grown, harvested, made into wine and aged in barrel, it cannot be known whether they will meet Karlo winemakers’ standards for blending SEXTUS *TM .
If Karlo is unable to produce SEXTUSTM in a particular year, at its sole discretion, Karlo may either blend the varieties into other wines, or release them as single varietals.
The Purchaser must consent to share their contact information, and it is The Purchaser’s sole responsibility to update Karlo should The Purchaser change address. Karlo staff will duly complete a SEXTUS lll *TMFutures Certificate for each Purchaser. Karlo agrees to maintain The Purchaser’s name, purchase record and contact information in a secure manner in Karlo’s SEXTUS lll TM Futures Register, backed up on its cloud. However, this certificate will remain the only definitive proof of purchase.
In the unlikely event that SEXTUS lll TM cannot be produced within the next 5 years from the date of purchase, either 90% of the purchase price can be refunded to The Purchaser, or 100% may be redeemed for Karlo events or credited towards the purchase of other Karlo wines.
